There are a handful of trends happening in Paris at the mintue that I'm decidely lukewarm about. The Do It Yourself trend however, I'm completely on board for.
Chacun Ses Gouts opened in August 2012 but has not had nearly enough people talking about it. It's a Frozen Yoghurt joint where you serve yourself from a choice of yoghurts and toppings.
When I stepped inside yesterday, I was welcomed by a big smile and the most helpful, friendly waitress I've ever made the acquaintance of in France! She explained the concept, and offered me samples of the yoghurts so I'd know what to pick. Natural, Vanilla, Melon and Chocolate were the frozen varities available on offer, as well as normal-temperature yoghurt if you prefered. This was served from a machine that looked to me rather like an oversized-American fridge.
Next come the toppings: strawberry, mango, coconut flakes, praline, nuts, popping caramel and raspberry coulis made locally are just some of those I can remember. You add as much or as little as you like because you pay according to the weight of your pot. It's like kids' pick'n'mix, just healthier!
It seems most people take to go, but if you want to sit in, there's a corner with a couple of tables, arm chairs and even a couple of cushions in the window. The desired vibe, as my hostess told me, is to make it seem as homely as possible and it's true - I found myself ready to hunker down for the evening with a DVD!
On top of all that, the central location makes it a great place to come meet a friend, and they also offer coffee and hot chocolate. In short, I don't have a single bad word to say about these guys!!
- But, just as an aside, if you like Frozen Yoghurt, don't even bother with Yoghurt Factory. The place is too commercialised for me and stinks of waffles (which is a smell I love, but just not when I'm trying my hardest to keep to my New Year's Resolutions!)
