I'd heard such good things about La Table d'Eugene that it was high time that I popped by and gave it a go. It's a little restaurant on a small side-street in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, near the junction of Marcadet-Poissonniers

The restaurant itself is nothing special, if I am to be brutally honest. It only has a maximum of about 25 covers, being served by two fairly surly ladies. The weekday lunchtime menu, however, is a steal at 19 euros for a main course and café gourmand.

Being a Saturday, we unfortunately missed out on that deal and had to go for the 30 euro menu, which includes either a starter-main or main-pudding.

My sources had not been lying. The food is of a very, very high standard.

Finished off by a coffee and (blink and you missed it) a twinkly smile from the waitress, it was a very good meal. It's not cheap and you get your food at the speed that they ordain, rather than at the pace that you would like, but then this is France and that is the norm. The chef could possibly lighten up on the foam and find something else to play with in the kitchen toy-box (or maybe it was just my poor menu choice that meant both my starter and main involved a foam concoction,,,) but all that aside, this is undoubtedly a jewel in an otherwise dull-gastro-neighbourhood, and I too, even at risk of joining the echo chamber, would strongly advise you to go.
