This is a small café in the trendy Marais, which serves traditional Breton ('from Brittany') fare in a modern setting. They have a set menu of galettes and crepes at very reasonable prices (starting at 4 or 5 euros) as well as the blackboard which changes more frequently with seasonal produce. Everything looked delicious and there are plenty of options for vegetarians too.
The drinks menu is relatively limited, apart from an extensive list of ciders. Most are organic ciders from small, local producers. (Everything's organic here.) A cute little twist is that you then drink your cider out of, what I would call, a bowl. (In France, it's very common to drink coffee, hot chocolate etc out of a bowl, but I'd never drunk cider from a bowl before.)
We started with the galettes. These are made from buckwheat flour (therefore perfect for anyone intolerant to gluten) and are savoury. Their name comes from the French word for a stone ('galet') on which they used to be cooked. Crêpes, by comparison, are made from wheat flour and often have sugar added to the batter.
To be quite honest, they were a little bit dry in places. I found myself wanting to avoid the edges to get to the good squidgy cheese in the middle. Even after just one galette, we were pretty full, but I twisted my friend
's arm and we ordered the sweet crêpes. And I'm glad we did, in my opinion, the crêpes were way better than the galettes. Spectacularly good!
I knew that they opened at 12 noon so we got there at 12.30pm and discovered that we were lucky to get a table immediately. By 1pm, the queue for a table was out the door.... but once you've got your table, the staff were very friendly and didn't make us feel hurried. A really good address - especially if you are somebody with a dietary requirement.
closed Mondays and Tuesdays
open 12 noon - 11pm.
Hot off the press: because of their overwhelming success, the Breizh Cafe have just expanded to open their own grocery store. Now you can buy their salted butter caramel to take home with you - why on earth not??
