At 11pm on the boulevard Saint Germain a couple of days ago, a friend and I were pretty desperate. Desperate for a steak to go with a bottle of wine that is - and not just any bottle of wine, but a Chateau Branaire Ducru 1994 at that.
We tried a couple of places first of all, but either they didn't have steak on the menu or they weren't happy with us bringing our own bottle. It really was a case of third time lucky for us, for not only did they let us bring our own but they didn't charge us corkage either. On a side note, you should have seen my companion's face when the waiter downed the glass we poured him!! ;)
The recollection of that evening still brings a smile to my face... but I can't work out if it was the awesomeness of the wine or juiciness of the steak matched with the crispy 'frites' or just the sheer sponetanity of the evening which clinched it.
So where did we end up?
Le Mondrian, on the corner of blvd Saint Germain and the rue de Seine.
The retro decor inside is bright, but it's far from being offensive. I've been back since and sat in one of the booths inside with a group of friends but I would recommend sitting either on the pavement or on the row of seats just set back from the pavement (from where the photo below was taken) and where you can benefit from people-watching potential too.
